      South and West Iceland has it all - spectacular waterfalls, beautiful beaches, active volcanoes and glaciers, hot springs, geysers and not least, friendly Icelanders. A few days on the South Coast will give you memories for a lifetime.

      Itinerary:

      Day 1 | Arrival in Reykjavik

      After disembarkation fetch your vehicle from the harbor car rental office. Leave the capital behind as you drive towards the south coast. First two nights in a typical Icelandic country inn.

      Day 2 | South Coast: Waterfalls and Black Beaches

      Highlights today include the spectacular Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls. With the frozen slopes of Myrdalsjokull glacier as a backdrop, admire the black beaches of Vik and dramatic cliffs of Cape Dyrholaey. En route visit the Lava Centre in Hvolsvollur.

      Day 3 | Geysers, Gullfoss and Norse Heritage

      Get an early start for the Haukadalur geothermal fi eld and the world famous Strokkur geyser and Gullfoss waterfall. Then make your way to historic Thingvellir National Park, where Iceland’s ancient parliament (the Althing) met between 930 and 1799 AD. The day ends near Borgarfjord on the west coast with an overnight in another typical Icelandic country inn.

      Day 4 | West Coast: Borgarfjord to Reykjavik

      Borgarfjord is home to Hraunfossar waterfall as well as the earth’s largest hot springs – Deildartunguhver. Driving via the Hvalfjordur, you should reach Reykjavik around noon. Spend a couple of hours exploring the Icelandic capital with its Nordic charm before dropping off your rental car and overnighting in Reykjavik.

      Day 5 | Return Journey

      Have you ever wondered what the inside of a volcano looks like? On this adventure unique to Iceland, visitors descend into the 4,000-year-old, dormant Thrihnukagigur Volcano. After a 50-minute hike along the crater floor, visitors descend via an open elevator 400 feet (192 meters) into a magma chamber once filled with glowing hot lava. Due to rough terrain, participants are advised to wear solid footwear as well as warm, waterproof clothing.

      Taking off from Reykjavík, the helicopter heads to Hvalfjördur Fjord and impressive Glymur waterfall cascading 640 feet (195 m) down a dark volcanic cliff. Fly to Thingvellir National Park (UNESCO) to get a bird’s eye view of the spectacular rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. On the final flight, soar over Mt. Hengill volcano and active geothermal field of steamy wonders and nearby geothermal power plant.

Hiking trails lead into the surrounding mountains and along the banks of Ljotipollur crater lake. There is also time to enjoy a dip in one of the freshwater springs which dot this amazing landscape.

      This eclectic journey takes visitors to the world famous Geysir area with its active geysers and Gullfoss waterfall, which plunges 230 feet (70 meters) in three stages into a narrow rock chasm. The journey continues into Thingvellir National Park, where Iceland’s ancient parliament convened, and the hot spring of Nesjavellir. On the way back to the capital, we briefly stop at the former bishopric of Skalholt and visit the greenhouses of Fridheimar.
