14 Myrdalsjokull Hofsjokull Langjokull D E NMA R K S T R A I T The South Some of the best known Icelandic sights are in this area including the Strokkur geyser, the geologically and historically interesting Thingvellir area and the imposing Gullfoss waterfall. Also located here is the famous Eyja allajokull glacier, which covers the caldera of an ancient volcano. Westman Islands are a group of 14 volcanic islands, only one of which is inhabited – Heimaey. Several spectacular waterfalls and dramatic sea cli s are also found along the south shore. The West Fi y- ve miles (90 km) long, the spectacular Snaefellsnes Peninsula is o en called “Iceland in Miniature” because it boasts many di erent landscapes from dramatic ords, snowcapped mountains and sandy beaches to shing villages, historical sites and waterfalls. Even by Icelandic standards, the region’s wilderness areas are incredibly pristine. The deep, narrow ords are also an excellent place to sh for cod, halibut, cat sh, haddock, saithe and red sh.
