      This 4,600 feet (1,400 m) high glacier is one of the most beautiful volcano of the island. An experienced guide will drive you by Snowcat to the top of the glacier. In good weather conditions you can enjoy a fantastic view over Hellissandur and Breidafjördur Bay and on especially clear days you might even spot the far-off Westfjords. The famous novelist Jules Verne once chose Snaefellsjokull Glacier to be the entrance “to the center of the Earth”.       Dive into the golden age of the herring boom at the award-winning Herring Museum. The era played an important role in the history of the Icelandic equal right movement.       Ásbyrgi is one wonder of nature. According to the legend the canyon was formed when Odin´s horse touched on of its feet to the ground. It is a wide, horseshoe shaped canyon with sheer cliff faces up to 316 feet in height. It is 2,17 miles long and over 0,68 miles wide. A distinctive rock formation rises up from the center of Ásbyrgi, up to 0,16 mile wide, known as Eyjan (the Island) which we will hike up. From Eyjan we will have a beautiful view over the canyon and the black sands in the north.

      The way to our starting point is already a highlight – we pass by waterfalls, drive over a mountain pass, along the Lake Lögurinn and pass by Iceland´s biggest wooden area – the Hallormsstadaskogur.       Various catastrophes have befallen the island of Heimaey and its inhabitants throughout history. Probably the most tragic incident to take place on the island was the pirate raid in July of 1627. The Algerian pirates landed on Heimaey and proceeded to pillage and plunder, burning farms, houses and the church, and killing or kidnapping 242 of the island’s 500 inhabitants.
